<p>Chennai: In yet another extra-judicial killing, a special team of Greater Chennai Police on Wednesday morning gunned down a 28-year-old suspect, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who was arrested in connection with a series of chain snatching incidents across the city. </p> <p>Jafar Gulam Husain, who is part of the Irani gang according to Chennai Police, was killed when he allegedly opened fire at the police team which was escorting him to the Taramani railway station to recover weapons used by his gang. </p> <p>The gang had indulged in snatching chains from eight people in just a few hours. </p>.Miscreants snatch gold chain from woman police inspector in Odisha market.<p>This is the fourth encounter by the Chennai Police after seasoned IPS officer A Arun took charge as the Commissioner of the city in July 2024 following the murder of state BSP chief K Armstrong. The latest encounter took place early Wednesday when Husain pulled out a country-made pistol and fired towards the police vehicle, following which the police team fired one round, resulting in his death.</p><p>Husain and Suraj, also from Uttar Pradesh, were arrested from inside the Chennai Airport on Tuesday afternoon, after a series of chain snatching incidents were reported from the city that morning, while another person has been picked up from Ongole in Andhra Pradesh. </p><p>“Both Husain and Suraj landed in Chennai and used a bike registered in Karnataka’s Bidar district to travel across the city. They began snatching chains of people at around 6 am and reached the airport and boarded a flight to Hyderabad. If we hadn’t gone on time, we would have missed them,” Arun told a press conference here. </p><p>The police commissioner said Husain is a repeat offender and had a criminal history with nearly 50 chain-snatching cases. “We deployed over 100 police personnel to scrutinise CCTV footage from several locations. That’s how we found that they were heading to the airport and we sent a special team to nab them after alerting authorities concerned,” the police commissioner added. </p><p>Asked about the encounter, Arun said the police team had to shoot in their defence when the accused fired at the vehicle. “They only fired one round,” he added. </p>
