CM Omar Abdullah urges PM Modi to restore Jammu & Kashmir's statehood during Vande Bharat train inaugural

Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reiterated his demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing hope that he would soon be heading a full-fledged state again.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express from Katra to Srinagar, Abdullah in his direct address to the Prime Minister said being downgraded to a Union Territory had been a setback, one he hoped would be rectified soon.

“I once served as Chief Minister of a state, and now lead a Union Territory. But I am confident this will be corrected — and that it will happen under your leadership, Prime Minister,” he said.

The Chief Minister used the occasion to highlight the political aspirations of the region, emphasizing that the demand for restoring statehood remains central following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019.

Reflecting on his own political path with a personal touch, Abdullah drew a contrast with that of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. “If you look at Mr. Manoj Sinha’s journey — due to the blessings of the deity — he got a promotion. As for me, I experienced a slight demotion,” he remarked, drawing both laughter and attention.

Offering warm thanks to the Prime Minister, he said the people of Jammu and Kashmir hoped for inclusive development — with the return of statehood and dignity. “My heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to you, Prime Minister. The people here await not just progress, but progress with pride and political identity,” he added.

Abdullah also hailed the long-awaited railway connection to the Kashmir valley, noting its historic significance. “This is a dream even the British could not realise. You’ve made it happen — Kashmir now stands connected to the rest of the country,” he told Modi.

After the event, the Prime Minister was seen engaging warmly with Abdullah and inviting him to sit beside him.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in his address, said, “Today, ‘Kashmir to Kanyakumari’ is no longer a mere slogan. With the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat now operational, the Prime Minister has fulfilled the vision of leaders like Sardar Patel and Syama Prasad Mookerjee.”

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also praised the completion of the ambitious project. “This rail line was a dream for generations. Despite daunting terrain and engineering challenges, it stands completed — thanks to the Prime Minister’s unwavering resolve, focused leadership, and the team’s tireless efforts,” he said.
