AI has edge over human intelligence, says Bradford UoM professor

“As compared to humans, machines are more capable in lie detection,” said, Hassan Ugail, Director of Centre for Visual Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Informatics, University of Bradford, UK.

Ugail was delivering a talk on ‘The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and World War-III: Man v/s Machine’, organised by the International Centre and Department of Studies in Computer Science, University of Mysore (UoM), at Senate Bhavan in Manasagangothri on Saturday.

He said humans are poor in detecting lies as machines have the latest technologies to detect a falsehood.

“Security agencies of many countries are using machines for crime detection. Humans are good in face recognition but machines are better than us. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a new concept. In 1956 itself, scientists conducted a wide range of research but in the last one decade, extensive studies on the said issue have increased. In the near future, machines would go beyond the intelligence of humans,” he said.

He said human intelligence cannot compete with AI in terms of memory as man is not prepared to utilise his brain for the full extent.

‘AI can harm human race’
“AI is contributing immensely in calculation, face recognition and crime detection. AI can harm the human race and it is an issue of concern. If World War III breaks out, robots will replace soldiers and the chances of using nuclear bombs in the war is high. We should ensure that AI is not given the responsibility to take final decisions,” he said.

University of Mysore in-charge VC Dayananda Mane, Faculty of Science and Technology Dean T K Umesh, International Centre Director G R Janardhan and Computer Science department chairman D S Guru were also present.
