'Banks should hold CSR activities in rural areas'

Now it is time for the banks to relocate such activities among the rural underprivileged population of the district, he opined. He was addressing the gathering after the inauguration of Vijaya Bank 81st Founder’s Day celebrations at Founder’s branch at Jyothi on Sunday.

He said that Dakshina Kannada district is one among the top districts in India in many areas including the less mortality rate when compared with other districts. The Human Development Index is very high in the district, even though the rural areas in the district are still lack basic facilities.

The government has certain limitations and the government requires ample support from the banks to improve this condition. The CSR activities of banks are quiet appreciable in this aspect, he said.

ZP CEO also urged banks to help in the promotion of tourism in the district. “Tourism has a vast scope in Dakshina Kannada. Religious tourism, beach tourism etc in the district has enough potential to lead us to a new era of development. But sadly, we have not exploit it much,” he said and added that banks should help the administration to achieve this goal.

Karnataka Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat asked banks to help the government in different developmental works. “In Kerala, they have built airport at Calicut in Public Private Partnership. In Kannur, they have started the primary works of a new Airport. But in Mangalore, the airport which we have now still lacks facilities. This condition should change. For that, the help from private sector, especially banks is immensely required,” he said.

Former MP and Director of Vijaya Bank B Ibrahim, Vijaya Bank Regional Office DGM Sudhakar Shetty M were also present. The guests felicitated different people who contributed to the CSR activities of Vijaya Bank. As a part of the CSR activities of the bank, A B Shetty Circle at Pandeshwar was inaugurated on Sunday. A computer training center for under privileged was also inaugurated at Vijaya Towers, Jyothi on the occasion.
