Bangalore University blacklists 50 evaluators for erroneous marking of answer scripts

Bengaluru: Bangalore University (BU) has blacklisted more than 50 evaluators from both government and private colleges for errors in evaluating undergraduate examination answer scripts.

The issue came to light during the printing of mark cards for the 2022-23 batch. Authorities noticed irregularities in the marks awarded and initiated a verification process. The findings were startling: students who had failed the main exams were marked as passed after revaluation, only to fail again during verification.

Shockingly, many students who believed they had passed based on revaluation results did not question their marks cards when labelled "Fail".

Varsity sources said over 100 answer scripts showed discrepancies.

"The main evaluation was accurate, and the students failed based on their performance. However, during revaluation, all of them were inexplicably marked as passed. Verification revealed the original failures were justified," a source explained.

The university summoned the evaluators involved, demanded explanations, and blacklisted them. "Since the process involves digital evaluation, it was straightforward to identify the irregularities," the source added.

In some instances, students who scored single digits in the main exams were inexplicably awarded up to 50 marks during revaluation.

"Although these discrepancies pertain to the 2022-23 batch, the marks cards had been delayed and remained under review," the source noted.

Registrar (Evaluation) Srinivas C confirmed the actions taken: "We have barred the errant evaluators from participating in the next two semester evaluations following their misconduct."
