BBMP launches campaign to promote coexistence with community animals

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a campaign across 250 locations within its jurisdiction to raise awareness about community animals and promote harmonious coexistence.

The initiative, spearheaded by the BBMP's Animal Husbandry Department under the theme "Public Health through Animal Health", was officially inaugurated by Vikas Suralkar, Special Commissioner for Health and Animal Husbandry, BBMP, at the Dr Rajkumar Glass House in the BBMP head office.

Speaking at the launch, Suralkar said it is crucial to educate citizens about laws related to community animals and how to handle related issues responsibly.

“This awareness initiative aims to prevent acts of animal cruelty, whether intentional or unintentional,” he added.

The campaign will provide information on citizens' rights and responsibilities concerning community animals, including whom to contact in case of problems.

Highlights of the campaign

Street dramas and dances will be held in all eight city zones as part of the initiative, while informative pamphlets will be distributed to further spread awareness.

Legal implications of animal cruelty

Citizens are reminded that acts such as relocating animals, denying them food and water, or causing harm are punishable under IPC Section 325 (killing, maiming, or harming animals) and can result in up to five years of imprisonment and a fine.

Also, harassing or obstructing those who feed animals can attract up to seven years of imprisonment.
