Bengaluru's Sadashivanagar residents organise plogging drive, collect 280 kg waste

Bengaluru: The Sadashivanagar Residents' Welfare Association undertook the 'Clean Green Sadashivanagar' initiative on Sunday, with more than 250 residents, volunteers, and students participating.

The association adopted the Swedish plogging method — where people pick up litter while jogging, brisk walking, or hiking. Participants cleaned a stretch of about 8 to 10 km and collected over 280 kg of waste.

"We are following the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) cleaner Bengaluru initiative and want to make Sadashivanagar a model area," said Sriram Tadimalla, a resident of the area.

Association members said that while the authorities are doing a good job of keeping the city clean, it is also the responsibility of residents to avoid littering on the roads or other public areas.

"This is also an awareness campaign for residents to dispose of garbage in designated places and follow cleaner initiatives," said Vishal S Makhija, association secretary.

"Swedish alumni, Sattvam, students from schools and colleges, and children as young as six are participating in the drive to raise awareness," he added.

The crew was divided into colour-coded teams — red, orange, blue, yellow, and green — and the locality was split into zones.

"We have assigned 10 to 15 members to each zone to help clean the locality faster," said Rahul Tadimalla, another resident.

"GBA workers have been very helpful and have coordinated well with the residents, which is appreciated," said Indu Sridhar, resident and former association president.

The awareness drive also included children to help them understand and follow proper decorum.
