Namma Metro: BEML to supply 7 more trains for Pink Line for Rs 405 cr

Bengaluru: BEML Limited will supply seven more trainsets to Namma Metro under an existing contract. 

The six-coach trainsets will be deployed on the Pink Line. 

BEML Limited announced on Friday that it had received a contract to supply seven more trains (42 coaches) to Namma Metro for Rs 405 crore. 

In August 2023, the PSU had won the biggest contract in Namma Metro's history to supply 318 coaches (53 trainsets), including their comprehensive maintenance for up to 15 years. 

Valued at Rs 3,177 crore, this contract was funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). 

With the additional order, BEML will now supply a total of 360 coaches (60 trainsets) to Namma Metro. 

All coaches will be equipped with the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC), a signalling system that allows metro trains to run at a frequency of just 90 seconds. 

Notably, BEML will supply the additional coaches at a lower price of Rs 9.64 crore per coach. At Rs 3,177 crore, the 318 coaches cost Rs 9.99  crore apiece (Rs 7.74 crore per coach and Rs 0.13 crore for maintenance). 

Of the 318 coaches, 96 are for the Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara-Nagavara), 96 for Phase 2A (Silk Board Jn-KR Pura), and 126 for Phase 2B (KR Pura-Airport). 

The PSU has promised to deliver the prototype coach for the Pink Line later this year and fulfill the entire order by the end of 2026. On average, it would supply 2-3 coaches per month. 

The additional coaches will be supplied only after the initial order is fulfilled. 

The Pink Line is to open by December 2026. Phases 2A and 2B are expected to open by late 2026 or early 2027.
