Troubling fellow passengers: Namma Metro sees 27,000 cases

Bengaluru: Namma Metro officials have recorded nearly 27,000 instances of commuters inconveniencing fellow passengers through “offensive activities”, with the majority involving individuals occupying priority seats meant for pregnant women, people with disabilities, and the elderly.

This data emerged during routine security checks conducted by personnel during non-peak hours between September 2024 and March 2025. While no fines were imposed, security personnel issued stern warnings to violators.

A total of 11,922 cases were reported for playing loud music inside metro trains, while at least 14,162 instances involved commuters occupying priority seats without offering them to those in need.

Additionally, security personnel registered 554 cases of passengers consuming food while travelling and 474 cases of commuters carrying oversized luggage.

2 arrested for mobile phone theft

Two individuals were detained at the Cubbon Park metro station with stolen mobile phones by the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) personnel deployed for crowd management on Wednesday night.

A 12-year-old boy and Sanjit, 23, both from Jharkhand, were found in possession of seven stolen mobile phones, allegedly taken from cricket fans at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the IPL match. The suspects were handed over to the Cubbon Park police for further investigation.
