Painting exhibition by recovering alcoholics in Bengaluru

A painting exhibition in the city is showcasing the works of individuals recovering from alcoholism. Held in observance of Alcohol Awareness Month (April), the show highlights healing through art.

The exhibition features graphic designer Muralidhar Cherukuri; Sachin Raj, a visual arts facilitator at a school,  award-winning artist N D R Gnana Vetri Velu, and a designer who goes by the name Pete Mostly. Velu trained under the legendary painter Yusuf Arakkal, and his murals are displayed in star hotels, government buildings, and corporate offices.

Around 20 paintings are on display. They are centred on themes of resilience, hope, and transformation. Fittingly titled ‘Humanizing Recovery’, the show includes works priced between Rs 1,500 and Rs 45,000. The collection features a mix of pen, acrylic, watercolour, and oil on canvas.

Pete turned to alcohol to cope with a difficult childhood. His paintings reflect the chaos of losing control and the journey back through art, which he uses as a mindful way to process his emotions. In one piece, a head sits on top of another, looking on devilishly. “That head represents alcoholism — a disease that once ruled my life,” he explains.

Raj has contributed eight artworks to the show. Talking about the importance of art, he says, “Each canvas is like a moment in life — something to cherish and hold on to.”

Perry Menzies, owner of Urban Solace, where the exhibition is being held, explains how the idea came to life: “We initially planned a talk on alcoholism. Through discussions with experts, we discovered that art therapy is one of the most effective forms of healing.”

On Saturday, at 7 pm, the venue will host an expert talk on alcohol addiction, its impact, and recovery processes. Individuals in recovery will share their testimonials.
