Great stuff but no sale

The recently held Shilpi Haat by Uttar Pradesh (UP) Handicrafts Expo at Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhawan from July 1-15 saw many craftsmen from UP showcasing their collection of crafts including sarees, readymades’ for men and women, furnishings which included bedcovers, cushion covers, handicrafts and gift items, jewellery, house decoration items, gem stones etc.

Organised by the Uttar Pradesh Trade Promotion Authority and Ministry of Textiles, the exhibition-cum-sale witnessed least number of customers. According to craftsmen, lack of publicity by the government resulted in loss of sales. With a total of 35 stalls, the exhibition had a wide range of handicrafts and handlooms but hardly any takers.

Ramesh Chand Mahor from Hathras, UP who was selling jewellery said, “There is absolutely no sale. We haven’t earned anything as there are no customers. We have spent extra on our transportation, food and hotels but made no money. We are regretting coming here.” Most participants had similar stories to share.

Another craftsperson, Naazma Banu from Lucknow who was selling chikan dress materials said it would have better if they had not come down. “No sale is bad enough. Then there are these government officials who come here with their spouses and take away fabrics for free. We can’t even say no to them.”

The Centre along with other states of India has been working together for the longest time to promote the local crafts and artifacts of respective states and this effort has helped the craftsmen to make a healthy living and get more value for their handicrafts but this time, the effort seems to have fallen short.
