Music composer-singer Anu Malik says he does not understand why there is a debate on actors singing in films or at stage shows.

The composer says even though actors at times croon to a track, he believes they don’t have any intention to take up singing as their profession.

“There is nothing wrong with actors singing as they anyway don’t sing regularly. Their profession is acting and they very well know that. They (actors) don‘t intend to make it (singing) a profession,” says Malik.

“I like when I hear Amitabh Bachchan sir’s voice. I don’t understand why there is a debate on it,” he says.

In April this year, Malik’s nephew, singer Armaan Malik, got into a Twitter fight with Sonakshi Sinha after he criticised the trend of actors turning playback singers.

“I don‘t want to talk about any one person. If an actor performs he or she is doing it for fun and entertainment. So, it is alright. They are going to be actors, they are not professional singers.

“I am a composer and I will be that. But tomorrow, if I get an offer to act,
I might do it if I like it.”

With the advent of Armaan, Arijit Singh, Neha Kakkar, Kanika Kapoor, Jonita Gandhi, singers like Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu are not singing much now.

“There are so many singers around so there is an opportunity for all (to sing). Youngsters have their own way of working. But eventually only talent matters. Talented singers will never fade away.”

The composer also feels that singers should not use technology.
