Ticketless travel: SWR nets Rs 2 lakh in penalty

The South Western Railway on Monday collected a fine of Rs two lakh from ticketless travellers during an intensive checking drive. A team of 40 ticket checking staff and 45 personnel from the Railway Protection Force took part in the drive. As many as 650 cases of ticketless travel and unbooked luggage were detected during the checking.

Sanjiv Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru Division, said that in spite of low fare people board trains without buying tickets. On an average, 9,000 cases of ticketless travel and unbooked luggage are detected every month and around Rs 1.05 crore is collected as fine, he added. He said that people can buy tickets from counters, automatic ticket vending machines etc., before commencing journey.
