<p>Mangaluru: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker and Mangalore MLA U T Khader said that two bridges sanctioned by Cabinet for Mangalore constituency aim at reducing the traffic congestion on NH 66 and also at promoting tourism in the constituency.</p><p>Parallel to Nethravathi bridge, a bridge from Kotepura to Bolara will be constructed at a cost of Rs 200 crore. It will be one of the longest bridges covering a 1.5 km stretch in the region. A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared for the same by a consultant through the PWD. In the past before the construction of Nethravathi bridge, Kotepura was a centre of business activities, with goods from port getting unloaded and loaded to further transport it to Kerala, he told mediapersons in Mangaluru.</p>.Mangaluru police registers 1,090 drug-related crime cases in 2024.<p>“The bridge will be 12 meters wide. The bridge design will be prepared in such a manner as to facilitate the people to get a view of the Arabian sea at a closer quarters. Once the bridge is completed, then 50 per cent of the traffic on the NH 66 via Pumpwell will be reduced. All those from Bunder, Kudroli, Bolar will use it and it will also be an alternative to the NH 66. Further, there are also plans to develop a sea side road from Kotepura to the Kerala border, to facilitate tourism,” explained Khader.</p><p>Another bridge from Sajipa Nadu to Thumbe at a cost of Rs 62 crore has been sanctioned which will benefit people from Arkula, Meramajalu, Thumbe. Without the bridge, the residents from Sajipa had to travel via Melkar, Bantwal to reach Thumbe. In fact, it was my dream to get these bridges sanctioned and I had placed a demand with the Chief Minister before getting elected as a Speaker as well,” he said.</p><p>To a query on people struggling to cross the railway line between Thokkottu and Olapete, Khader said that a foot bridge has been proposed. "We are ready to fund the foot bridge. The railways have to approve it."</p><p>To a query on Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the alleged crimes of RR Nagar BJP MLA Munirathna, and seeking permission for prosecution of the MLA, the Speaker said that he will discuss it with the Assembly secretary.</p><p>On a remark by MLC C T Ravi, he said that it was unfortunate and Council Chairman will take a decision, he said.</p>
