Chetna Kumble, ex-husband to share parenting rights?

Last Updated 24 August 2009, 16:28 IST

In an application Kumar Jahagirdar, former husband of Chetna, has suggested ‘shared parenting.’

A Bench headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee asked Chetna to file a reply to the suggestion by August 28, the next date of hearing.

Advocate Mukul Rohtagi appearing for Chetna said his client would be filing the reply in a week. Earlier, the Apex Court had decided the issue and had given the girl’s custody to Chetna, who is now married to cricketer Anil Kumble. Advocate Prashant Bhushan appearing for Jahagirdar submitted that in the changed circumstances the father is in favour of ‘shared parenting’ of the 13 year-old-girl.‘’Jahagirdar is married and has a family to look after the girl, if the girl’s dual custody is granted to her father,’’ he said.

Chetna had filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Karnataka High Court to admit the plaint filed by Jahagirdar staking his claim for the girl’s custody, who is staying at Kumble’s residence.

The SC in a ruling on January 31, 2004 had given the exclusive custody of the girl to Chetna from her previous marriage to Jahagirdar after a two-year litigation. Jahagirdar was given the visitation rights by the court.
