<p>Chetana, 21, who was in a coma at Nimhans for the past 17 days, passed away late on Tuesday night.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Contrary to her family’s allegations that she was a victim of overdose of sedatives administered by Dr Deepak at a local hospital in Chitradurga, medical authorities at Nimhans said that when she was brought to the hospital, she was diagnosed with an advanced stage of rabies — caused because of a neglected dog bite. <br /><br />Dr P Sateesh Chandra, director, Nimhans, said that the girl succumbed to the disease despite the best medical care. <br /><br />Chetana had opened her eyes two days ago, after a long coma. Though she could not recognise anybody nor speak, she had kept her eyes open for some time. Her family said this had given them hope that she may recover. <br /><br />A resident of Chitradurga, Chetana was admitted to Krishna Nursing Home in the second week of July, because of a strong fever. Here, the family said Deepak had given her an overdose of sedatives and medication which had pushed the girl to coma. The family took her to many hospitals, including Kasturba Medical College in Manipal. She was even presumed dead and the family was taking her home, when one of the relatives saw slight movement in her limbs. She was immediately rushed to another private hospital. Health Minister U T Khader had her admitted to Nimhans. <br /><br />Nagaraj, Chetana's elder brother, said she was bitten by a street dog twice in May, behind her house when she was washing dishes. He said that the dog had bitten four other people the same day and added that they had not been affected. He said Chetana was indeed treated that day and did not develop any complications. <br /><br />He said that the family admitted her to the private nursing home when she developed fever in July. He alleged that Deepak did not treat her properly and tried to conceal her medical condition from the family. On being told that the authorities at Nimhans had diagnosed her with rabies, he had allegedly claimed that the diagnosis was wrong. <br />The girl’s body was shifted to Victoria Hospital, where autopsy was performed on Wednesday morning. <br /></p>
