Town Panchayat members have urged the administration to clear the encroachment of the historic Anekere Lake.

During the general meeting of the Town Panchayat, headed by Town Panchayat president Nalini Ganesh on Friday, the members alleged that the lake has been encroached by a few individuals for the last several years.

Member Udayshankar said that even though the discussions on the encroachment of the lake are being held during the meeting of the Town Panchayat for the past many years, the problem has not been solved.

Member Sheela D’Souza demanded a survey of the lake and urged for action to be initiated against the encroachers.

Town Panchayat chief officer Nachappa assured the members of doing the needful.

The members decided to submit a proposal to Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Ltd and the Minor Irrigation Department for the development of Anekere lake.

Somwarpet Town Panchayat vice president B Sanjeeva, members B C Venkatesh and Jeevan said that there is a drinking water problem in several wards in the town.

The water crisis will be aggravated in April and May. The officials should take appropriate measures, they said.

Town Panchayat president Nalini Ganesh expressed her discomfiture about the working style of the staff in the water supply department.

The concerned staff members are not providing a report to the Town Panchayat on the technical problems such as defunct air valves and leakage in the pipeline, she said.

She also directed Town Panchayat chief officer Nachappa to initiate strict action against irresponsible staff.

Engineer Hemakumar opined that the motor pumps in the water supply units in Duddugallu and Harangi should be upgraded.

The TP members resolved to submit a memorandum to the government to request granting of permission for utilizing an advance amount of about Rs 1.5 crore gathered through commercial stall revenue, towards purchasing land for housing schemes.

B R Shubhakar, Jeevan, B Nagarathna, P K Chandru, Sheela D’Souza and Venkatesh were elected to the standing committee of the Town Panchayat. Standing committee president Jayanthi Shivakumar was present.
