Demonetised currency notes in Kollur temple hundi

Last Updated 05 November 2018, 19:01 IST

Even after two years of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the offering boxes of temples (hundis) have been receiving demonetised currency.

Kollur Mookambika Temple authorities, who decided to count the notes and document the offerings at the temple after Navaratri festivities, came across demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 along with the new currency notes, coins, dollars, gold and silver items.

Now, the authorities have started counting the demonetised currency notes received. The temple management committee is worried over the disposal of demonetised notes and also how to change the mentality of the devotees who offer demonetised notes to the hundi. This is not the first time we are getting old or invalid notes, the committee members said.

Temple executive officer H Halappa said the government should initiate measures to exchange the demonetised currency notes received at the temple hundi. Administrative Committee member Vadamballi Jayaram Shetty said the devotees should introspect on offering a currency that is no longer valid to the temple hundis.
