Farmers against Marigold processing unit

Opposing intention of authorities to reopen Omnicon Marigold Processing Unit, farmers staged protest, in Hassan, on Friday.

They picketed the Tahsildar Manjunath who visited the centre to examine on backdrop of its reopening.

Farmers and agitators alleged that the waste that was let out into the lake from the factory, which polluted the water source. The fishes in the lake were killed aside from cattle which consumed the water. Officials of Pollution Control Board had ordered for closure of the unit.
Tahsildar Manjunath said that meetings were held with the residents regarding the reopening of the unit.

He said that farmers have been requested to allow for the unit to function to process the 6,000 tonne of marigold flower which was accumulated in the unit.

“After the processing, the unit will be closed,” he added.
