Alert members of the public, with the help of police, rescued four tourists, who were caught in the swirls of river Cauvery at Shivanasamudra on Tuesday.

The rescued are Palaniappan, Doreswamy, Thambi and Pushpakumari from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is said that they were on a trip to Gaganachukki and Shivanasamudra. They had earlier visited Sri Ranganathaswamy temple and offered prayers.

Later, they got into the river at around 2.30 pm and waded to a little distance and relaxed on a boulder in the river. But the water level rose suddenly at around 5.30 pm. They were caught as they could not get into the water and screamed for help.

Locals Kalaiah and Yousuf, who heard them screaming for help, immediately alerted Kollegal Rural police, who with the help of expert divers and locals rescued the four to safety.
