<p>Mangaluru: Since 1976, Dakshina Kannada district has witnessed 49 murders that led to unrest in society, clashes between communities forcing police to implement prohibitory orders.</p><p>A popular news agent Ismail was found strangled to death in Kalladka, around 37 kms from Mangaluru, in 1976. The rumours that leaders of Jan Sangh were behind the murder of Ismail had triggered unrest and wide-spread vandalism. </p><p>In 1978, editor of a <em>Kannada Daily,</em> Raghavendra M Nagori was stabbed to death near his printing press in Hampankatta over a rivalry between two gangs. </p> .<p>But the murder triggered rumours that Raghavendra from Kalladka was murdered in retaliation to murder of Ismail. To prevent any loss of lives and destruction to property, police enforced a week-long curfew. In 1998 three people were murdered in Suratkal. </p><p>In the same year, a scrap trader was murdered due to a tiff while playing cricket in Polali. In 2001 an autorickshaw driver in Kandavar and a carpenter in Kudroli in 2002 were murdered.</p> .<p>In the worst ever communal violence that erupted over eve teasing in 2003, seven people from one community and two people from another were murdered. A police constable was also murdered near clock tower. In 2005, Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat President Jabbar, rickshaw driver and unidentified labourer from Uttarkannada district were murdered.</p> .<p>In 2006, three murders were witnessed over the issue of illegal cattle trafficking. In 2006, the murder of Mulki Sukhanand Shetty ended with police resorting to Golibar in order to disperse the violent mob. </p><p>Two protestors lost their lives in the Golibar incident. Close on the heels of Mulki Rafiq encounter by police, a popular Hindu leader Ananthu was murdered in 2008. In 2016, Maduru Isubu and Ganesh Shetty were murdered within the barracks of district jail.</p><p>Bewteen 2017-18, Prashant Poojary (Moodbidri), Harish (Bantwal), Sharath Madivala (B C road), Deepak Rao (Suratkal), Basheer (Kottarachowki) and Ashraf Kalai (Benjanpadavu). In 2020, a protest by muslims against CAA in Bunder resulted in police ordering a golibar. </p><p>Two youth lost their lives in the Golibar incident. The murder of Praveen Nettar in Sullia taluk in 2022 was followed with the murder of Fazil in Suratkal. </p> .<p>In 2025 within a span of one month, three murders were witnessed. Sunil Kumar S in his research (The emergence and consolidation of rightist ideology and politics in Karnataka with special reference to coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada a critical study, awarded doctoral degree by Mysore University) said; "The right wing political forces promoted communal violence in the region mainly to gain political mileage in Coastal Karnataka."</p><p>Coastal Karnataka should not remain as ‘Hindutva Laboratory’ since it would jeopardize the lives of the marginalized sections of society. It should be converted into a land of secularism, multiculturalism and Indian nationalism, Sunil had said.</p>
