A 68-year-old man from Kulakaru village near Kargal in Sagar taluk died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also known as monkey fever, in the wee hours of Friday at KMC hospital at Manipal in Udupi.

The deceased has been identified as Pashwanath Jain, a daily wage labourer. It is said that the man was admitted to the general hospital in Sagar after he complained of fever on February 22. He was shifted to the KMC hospital in Manipal, where he tested positive for KFD. He breathed his last in the hospital after battling for life for more than a week.

Speaking to DH, District Health Officer Rajesh Suragihalli said the man recovered from KFD earlier this year. He was admitted to the KMC hospital again after he fell sick. He might have died of KFD. But the autopsy report is awaited.

It may be mentioned here that if the report confirms that he died of KFD, the death toll would rise to nine in the district.
