<p>Shivamogga: MLA S N Channabasappa mooted the idea of constructing a mall in Shivamogga to provide a platform for local artisans to display their creative works and a permanent market for their products.</p><p>Speaking after inaugurating the three-day Malenadu Handicraft Festival, Saras Fair, and Pushpasiri flower and fruit exhibition jointly organised by the Zilla Panchayat, Horticulture Department, and District Udyana Kala Sangha at Allamaprabhu Park (Freedom Park) on Friday, Channabasappa said the large-scale handicraft and flower exhibition organised in Shivamogga is similar to the ones organised in Bengaluru.</p><p>“The replicas of Kuvempu’s Kuppali house and the Chandragutti Renukamba temple are major attractions. Artisans have unveiled our culture through their art,” he said.</p><p>Hailing Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, the MLA said Hemanth’s dream of organising the Malenadu Handicraft Festival has come true. Such events can be organised only if the officers show interest and take the lead. It seems like the festival has done justice to artisans and their works.</p><p>Handicraft expo and horticulture exhibition are excellent platforms to draw people. School children are also visiting the exhibitions in large numbers, the MLA said urging people to visit the exhibition.</p><p><strong>‘Curated thoughtfully’</strong></p><p>Malnad Area Development Board Chairman R M Manjunath Gowda said the Malenadu Handicraft Festival has been curated thoughtfully.</p><p>“Various handicrafts showcasing the speciality of Malenadu including terracotta items, Hase Chittara artworks, silk and bamboo crafts and others made by women are on dispaly. The fruits and flowers grown by farmers, and the exhibition of poet laureate Kuvempu’s books are special,” he said calling upon people to support artisans by purchasing local products.</p><p>District Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee Chairman Chandrabhoopal said the exhibition of fruits, flowers, and Malenadu handicrafts was attractive and useful. The handicrafts here have provided an experience of visiting all the taluks of the district, he said.</p><p>Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde informed that around 4.28 lakh flowers have been used to create stunning floral displays at the flower exhibition.</p><p>He said, “Shivamogga district produces excellent handicraft products but their sales are limited due to inadequate market facilities. This fair will help move towards online sales and encourage artisans. Arrangements for online sales will be made before the next fair."</p><p><strong>Handicrafts outlet on lines of Hopcoms</strong></p><p>Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Hemant N said there are plans to establish permanent stalls for handicraft products made by women where indoor and outdoor decorative items will be sold under one roof like Hopcoms.</p><p>He appreciated the gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, and National Rural Livelihood Mission teams who have worked hard to organise the fair.</p><p>Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department Savita was present.</p><p><strong>Over 50 stalls set up</strong></p><p>The three-day Malenadu Handicraft Festival, Saras Fair and fruit and flower exhibition is featuring various fruits and flowers grown by farmers, Malenadu handicrafts, Sahyadri crafts, Banjara Lambani attire, stone jewellery, Malenadu delicacies, Akka Cafe, mural paintings, Hase Chittara artworks, clay decorative stalls, Swadeshi, bamboo mats, wooden products, terracotta and khadi garments.</p><p>Over 30 stalls indoors and more than 20 stalls outdoors including those selling nursery plants, stalls from various departments, agricultural equipment, snacks, sarees, and clothes have been set up. </p><p>On Friday, several people and students visited the fair and posed for photos in front of a floral selfie frame that read ‘I love SMG’ and the replicas of Chandragutti Temple, and Kuvempu’s house.</p>
