Udupi-Chikmagalur Member of Parliament Shobha Karandlaje has written to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, appealing to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

In a memorandum, she has stated that officially the number of Tulu-speaking population is around six million. The oldest inscriptions in Tulu dates back to 14th to 15 century. Yet the language is not included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution till now.

“My Parliamentary constituency consist a majority of Tuluvas, who speak Tulu as their mother tongue. Same is the condition in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka and Kasargod district of Kerala. Even I hail from a Tulu family and I am proud of my origin. Tulu is also taught as a subject in the schools and university as well.”

She has appealed to the Home minister to direct the authority concerned to take necessary action to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
