Scholar disputes claims on Kanakadasa

Delivering the talk, Vijaya College (Mulki) Professor and Scholar Dr G Bhaskar Mayya said there is no substantial historical evidence to prove that Dasa Sahitya Proponent Kanakadasa had visited Udupi. Similarly, there are no historical proofs substantiating that the idol of Lord Krishna was installed by Saint Madhwacharya. “There is nothing to prove that Lord Krishna turned back to give ‘darshan’ to Kanakadasa,” he said and added that “it seems to be all gimmicks created by Saint Vadiraja during 16th century to please the lower class people.”

“Honestly speaking, the present idol of Lord Krishna is not the original one and it is the idol of some Goddess. Therefore, they decorate Lord Krishna with ‘Devi Alankara’ during Navarathri,” he ridiculed.

He said Dasa movement is the decadent of Bhakthi movement. Undoubtedly, Kanakadasa is the great scholar, writer, poet and artist. However, he remains to be the symbol of powerless strength to fight against upper class, caste system and represents a disintegrating system, he added.

Minority and Majority communalism are both equally dangerous. Today, the revolutionarists speak nonsense lacking the basic knowledge of Brahmanism, he said and added that the logic should be the centre of prose writing. Besides, humanistic approach should be the major focus of poetry, he said.
