Sportsmen who won in S Korean event honoured

Rajesh K Madival and Ashwin Sanil from the Fire Fighting and Emergency Services Department were honoured on Wednesday for their excellent performance in a sports event at Chungyu, South Korea.

Madival and Sanil, who represented India at the 13th International Sports Event for Fire Fighting and Emergency Services staff members, were offered a warm welcome and felicitated by the district Fire Fighting and Emergency Services Department at Pandeshwar in the city.

H S Varadarajan, Department director, said during the programme that Madival and Sanil have brought laurels to the Department.

Laurels

Madival is posted as a fireman in the Kumta fire station. He won the bronze in both 135-kg category bench press and the 435-kg category power-lifting events. He has also won several laurels in the state and national sports events. Madival has been awarded the chief minister’s gold medal, Varadarajan informed.

Speaking further, the director said that Sanil is a fireman at the Udupi fire station. He has attained the fourth and third positions in the 100-metre sprint and 4x100-metre relay events respectively. Like Madival, he too has won laurels in international sports events and his name would be recommended for the chief minister’s medal, said the director.

Madival and Sanil were also the only two sportspersons from Karnataka who participated in the sports event.

Speaking on the occasion, Madival and Sanil thanked the Department staff members for their support.

The competition was tough and it was difficult to get acquainted with the food culture in South Korea, they reminisced.
