Bengaluru: Amid protests by BJP over the shortage of urea fertiliser for the state’s farmers, Agriculture Minister N Chaluvarayaswamy on Wednesday urged the Union government to supply 1.36 lakh metric tonnes of the fertiliser that is due.
.
Addressing a news conference, the minister said, “By July-end, 1.36 lakh metric tonnes of urea is due from the Union government. Providing urea fertiliser is totally their responsibility. We only do the distribution. If they send the dues by tomorrow, we will immediately start the distribution.”
.
Chaluvarayaswamy explained that early and copious rains and increased maize cultivation by 2 lakh hectares had resulted in increased demand for urea. “Can we ask farmers why they are growing more maize?” he said.
.Urea shortage result of Karnataka's mismanagement: Sudhakar.
Tearing into the BJP for their criticism, he said: “Ashoka has claimed that goods go to Sri Lanka and from there to Bangladesh. I don’t know about his intelligence level. Who controls the borders?? Is he indirectly asking Modi or Amit Shah?? Whenever some information comes, farmers get into panic mode. Comments by opposition leaders are triggering such comments.”
.
Chaluvarayaswamy stated that the Rs 400 crore sanctioned by the previous BJP government for buffer had been retained.
.
While conceding that there had been an urea shortage in a few districts like Davanagere, Gadag, Koppal, Dharwad and Yadgir, the minister explained that it would be handled by using the extra stock from other districts.
.
“I met the Union Agriculture Minister (Shivraj Singh Chouhan) on July 7 and requested him to provide chemical fertilisers, specifically Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Urea. I will try to meet the Union Fertilisers minister (JP Nadda), explain the state’s situation and ask for the dues to be cleared,” he added.
