Mangaluru, dhns: A widow knocked the doors of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC), seeking help to secure title deeds over a piece of land.

Shobha, a resident of Shivaji Nagara in Meramajalu, Bantwal taluk, has been running from pillar to post for the past two years in order to avail of title deeds under Section 94 CC of the Karnataka State Land Revenue Act. In her letter to the KSHRC, she informs that she had been residing on a 5-cent land on Survey No 59/3B1 at Shivaji Nagara.

“I had grown coconut trees on the land in 2002 and the foundation for a new house too had been laid. Unfortunately, my husband passed away and I could not complete the work on the house. Another house, which had been a temporary dwelling for me and my two children, was demolished. The temporary house was in Meramajalu Gram Panchayat in June 2016. The things in the house had also been taken away,” she complained.

Desperate to provide a roof for herself and her children, she had applied for title deeds under Section 94 CC. On her appeal, then deputy commissioner on September 17, 2017, had written to taluk panchayat executive officer to issue title deeds to Shobha on humanitarian grounds. Bantwal Panchayat, in its meeting on August 10, 2016, had passed a resolution urging authorities to sanction her the title deeds.

Shobha says, “MLAs and ministers have expressed sympathy and supported my demand. Unfortunately, the gram panchayat authorities have refused to budge from their stand and sanction title deeds to the site.”

She has urged the KSHRC to direct the officials concerned to sanction title deed for the land and help her look at the future with a renewed hope.
