<p>Belagavi: President Draupadi Murmu said on Friday that it was the duty of healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care, which addressed the physical and psychological needs of cancer patients. </p>.<p>Murmu was speaking after inaugurating the Dr Sampatkumar S Shivanagi cancer hospital of the KLE Society here. </p>.<p class="bodytext">The President said that every word of sympathy and compassion that a doctor uttered had the power to change the life of the patient for better.</p>.<p class="bodytext">According to a global study, cancer is the leading cause of death in the world. In 2022, there were an estimated 2 crore new cancer cases and 97 lakh deaths worldwide.</p>.Nimhans is undisputed leader in mental health, says President Murmu.<p class="bodytext">In India, the incidence of cancer is about 100 patients for every one lakh people. As per a study done by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), cancer incidence in India was estimated to increase by about 13% in 2025, compared to 2020.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The President said that there was a need to spread more awareness regarding the causes, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“We come across many such cases where either due to ignorance of the patient and family or due to financial constraints, diagnosis and treatment of diseases are delayed. In case of cancer, this can prove fatal,” Murmu said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">She said that the fight against diseases such as cancer was a collective effort. </p>.<p class="bodytext">“We have seen that in some families, the health of boys is given more importance than that of girls. Many times, women in families do not get timely diagnosis and treatment for health issues,” Murmu said. Any such delay, especially in case of cancer, could be critical, she said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The President urged households to encourage women to share their problems. She said every member of the family and society needed to take the health of women more seriously and contribute in taking care of them and facilitating their treatment.</p>
