<p>Thiruvananthapuram: A spectacular display of decorative parasols and parading of around 30 elephants marked the Thrissur pooram festival of Kerala on Tuesday.</p><p>The Thekkinkadu ground of the Vadakkumnathan temple in the heart of the city was packed with spectators cutting across gender and age to enjoy the colourful display.</p><p>The pooram celebrations of the day began with an electrifying percussion performance by hundreds of artists led by Kizhakkootu Aniyan Marar near the 'Ilanji' tree. Popularly known as the 'Ilanjithara melam', the performance went on for over two hours.</p>.Conduct of Thrissur Pooram hangs in balance as relaxations on firework norms delayed.<p>It was followed by the Paramekavu and Thiruvambady devaswoms parading 15 elephants each on either side and carried out the competitive display of parasols. </p><p>Most of the parasols pertained to devotional figures of gods lit up with colourful led lights. Mobile camera flashes of the spectators who tried to click every moment and their cheer ups made the two hour long 'kudamattaom' more electrifying.</p><p>A firework display during the wee hours of Wednesday marked the culmination of the celebrations.</p><p>The state government made elaborate arrangements to ensure that the Thrissur pooram went off smoothly especially since last year's pooram was disrupted towards the fireworks owing to stringent police regulations.</p>
