Monsoon Highlights: 10 dead after heavy rains in Marathwada, NDRF sends team, chopper to Latur

Rains pounded several parts of Telangana on Monday, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy rains are expected at isolated places in different districts of the State over the next 48 hours. Cyclone 'Gulab', which crossed the Bay of Bengal coast near Kalingapatnam on Sunday night, weakened into a depression and caused widespread rains in several districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Maharashtra: 10 dead after heavy rains in Marathwada

Ten people died in heavyrainsand floods in Marathwada region of Maharashtra over the last 48 hours, officials said on Tuesday.

Besides, more than 200 cattle were washed away and number of houses were also damaged in therainfury in the region, which comprises eight districts - Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Jalna and Hingoli (PTI)

Dam water release causes flooding in Beed villages, neighbouring districts on alert

Heavy rainfall in catchment areas of the Manjara dam forced authorities to open all 18 gates of the reservoir to discharge water on Tuesday, which led to flooding in some villages of Maharashtra's Beed district while an alert was sounded in some neighbouring districts, officials said. Several families from the affected villages were shifted to safer places, they said, adding that so far there was no report of any casualty. After heavy rains on Monday night, the Manjara and Majalgaon dams in Beed were filled up to their maximum capacity.

Moderate to Intense spells of rain are likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Nasik, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg during next 3-4 hours. There is possibility of thunder/lightning accompanied with gusty winds in some areas, the IMD has said.

Depression lay centered over Telangana and adjoining areas of Marathwada and Vidarbha to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during next six hours, IMD has said.One team of NDRF is being prepositioned at Osmanabad, Maharashtra. (ANI)

Cyclone Gulab affected Visakhapatnam

The district Collector, along with Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner G Srujana, inspected the rain-affected areas in the city and supervised the relief operations. Chief Secretary Aditya Nath Das visited Srikakulam, the district worst affected by Gulaband reviewed the rescue and relief operations. The district administration sheltered over 1,500 people in 38 relief camps and provided food. Tens of houses were damaged in the heavy rain and 15 head of cattle died in the district (PTI)

Cyclone Gulab impact: Heavy crop damages reported in Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone 'Gulab', which crossed the Bay of Bengal coast near Kalingapatnam on Sunday night, weakened into a depression and caused widespread rains in several districts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday and also left a trail of destruction. Port city Visakhapatnam received a 30-year high rainfall of over 33.3 cm in 24 hours under the cyclone’s impact and left a woman dead today, taking the overall toll to two since Sunday.
