<p> Once known for their wealth and grace, the Memon family of Mahim is a scattered lot today. Referred to as the “first family” in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, the Memons who reside in the Al-Husseini building facing the Arabian Sea, mostly stay indoors.<br /><br />Two brothers and their wives – Tiger and Shabana and Ayub and Reshma have evaded investigators over the last two decades.<br /><br />Their father Abdul Razzak passed away during the course of the trial while mother Hanifa is ailing and wheelchair-bound. Parenting of the kids is done by Suleiman, the oldest of the Memon brothers who was acquitted by the TADA court , and his sister-in-law Raheen, wife of Yakub. Suleiman’s wife Rubina Memon was given a life sentence.<br /><br />Yakub, a chartered accountant and the most educated of the lot, has been ordered to be sent to gallows, while two ailing brothers Yusuf and Essa face life terms. Their duplex flat in the Al-Husseini buildings fifth and sixth floors have remained sealed for years now.<br /><br />All members of the family left for Dubai during the first and second week of March 1993 while the last to leave was Tiger. He left Mumbai in the wee hours of March 12.<br /><br />Tiger got into smuggling at the same time as Mohammed Dossa, Mustafa Dossa and Ejaz Pathan and came into contact with Dawood. During the riots that followed the demolition of the Babri mosque in December 1992, one of Tiger’s offices in Mandvi area was burnt down and he decided to take revenge and engineered the blasts.<br /><br />A major part of the conspiracy was hatched at Al-Husseini and even the bombs were prepared at the basement of the building at Mahim, very near to the local police station. The Mumbai Crime Branch got the leads after tracing the abandoned Maruti van of Rubina Memon at Worli. This led to the residence of Memons.</p>.<p>As far as Tiger's brothers were concerned, Suleiman started as a marketing agent and later worked in the Gulf. Ayub helped Tiger, while Yakub became a chartered accountant.<br /><br />Abdul Razzak was a sportsman and became known as Tiger after he had played cricket with former Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. <br /></p>
