Telangana police turn Twitter, Facebook happy

Last Updated 30 December 2017, 15:17 IST

Telangana police, who have declared 2018 as the year of technology and citizen friendly initiatives, will open a Facebook page and a Twitter handle for every police station in the state to connect with the local community daily.

All 800 police stations under the nine police commissionerates of the state will have their social media interface ready by the end of 2018.

Addressing a press conference, Director General of Police Mahender Reddy said similar initiatives taken at headquarters here have yielded very good results.

It will ensure transparency in police functioning, besides a high sense of accountability, he said. Similarly, mini- command and control centres at each district police headquarters will be linked to the state headquarters.

The Telangana police will also extend the e-challan system to districts and web-based applications such as e-petty case will be made available on the mobile platform to ensure that the response time is measured and monitored.

The DGP said Telangana police had gained an upper hand in the fight against left wing violence.

Extremist crime had declined by 90% in 2017, compared to last year. The recent surrender of CPI (Maoist) central committee member Jampanna and his wife is a major achievement. "This is reflective of the disillusionment among the cadres about the Maoist ideology and we see more important surrenders in coming months," he said.

However, the youngest state of the country has registered an increase of 12% in crime due to a spurt in cybercrime and crimes against women. Yet, the state fared better than its sibling state Andhra Pradesh, according to national crime statistics.
