'Sleeping with foot on table': Accident victim dies of excessive bleeding; doctor suspended for negligence

A junior resident doctor in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut government hospital was suspended for his negligence on Monday after a 30-year-old patient 'bled to death'.

According to a report by the Times of India, the patient was an accident victim and was admitted to the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial College but bled to death when he was left unattended for hours in the emergency ward.

A video of the doctor went viral on social media in which he can be seen sleeping in front of an AC with his leg stretched out on a nearby table.

The video also shows a woman holding a child along with a prescription, trying to wake him up but the junior doctor doesn't pay any heed.

The family of the victim who has been identified as Sunil Kumar, are seen pleading other staff in the government hospital for urgent medical treatment.

According to TOI, Dr R C Gupta, Principal of the hospital said, "Taking cognisance of the video, the concerned JR, Dr Bhupesh Kumar Rai, was immediately suspended, and a three-member committee was constituted to probe the family's allegations. The accident victim was probably admitted to the hospital's emergency ward around 1 am on Monday. We've also taken note of the fact that in the widely circulated video, the patient's family members were pleading for treatment."

Kumar's family said that he suffered a leg injury after an unidentified vehicle hit his two-wheeler on Sunday night.

According to the publication's report, they claimed that kept waiting for a long time for the doctor on duty to wake up.

Noticing Kumar's critical condition, they pleaded other medical staff in the hospital for medical attention, but could not receive any help from anyone.

Kumar's family alleged that he was left to die on a stretcher as he bled heavily.

According to a report by NDTV, Kumar died at 7 am on Tuesday. Dr Shashank Jindal, duty-in-charge was not present at the hospital at that time.

However during probe, Dr Jindal claimed that the moment he got to know about the incident, he came to the hospital and provided the victim with IV fluid and a cast.

The Meerut District Magistrate has been told to probe the incident.
