Verdict on live-streaming proceedings today

The Supreme Court will decide on Wednesday if its proceedings on, at least, the important constitutional matters involving public interest may be live-streamed.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud will pass its judgement on the petitions filed by law student Swapnil Tripathi, senior advocate Indira Jaising and advocate Mathews J Nedumpara, among others.

The top court, during the hearing, had indicated that live-streaming may be tried out initially as a pilot project, as suggested by Attorney General K K Venugopal.

Venugopal said a final decision may be taken depending on the success of the pilot project.

He said the live-streaming should be delayed by 70 seconds to allow the judges to mute the sound when a lawyer misbehaved.

He said it should not be allowed if the matter at hand is sensitive, such as involving individual privacy or national security.
