Just take a look at the sheer number of concerts being organised in the City by colleges as well as professionals! The kind of talent emerging from them is a definite proof of this trend.

Colleges too have been emerging out of the misconception that rock and Western music are evil and are embracing various genres of music in their fests.

Recently, St Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, for their annual cultural fest ‘Exodus’, had invited four semi-professional bands from the country to perform for the students and the turn out, they say, was the best ever.

The passion and dedication they have for their music is something they are very serious about. Says Prithvi, a second year student, who plays for ‘Experimental Chopsuey’, a Joseph’s band, “Music is something I take very seriously. Playing in a band and influencing the crowd with my music is what I have always wanted.”

The increasing support they get not only from their parents but also their college are important factors that push them to pursue their passion. But above it all is the kind of fan base many of these bands create amongst their fellow students is also encouraging.

Tanvi, a student of Jain University, says the popularity of a college bands largely depends on how good they are and how many gigs they play. “Nowadays, many college bands get opportunities to play in pubs and even go to other cities where they can attract more fans,” she adds.

To reach out to the crowd, many bands even use other avenues like online websites, Facebook fan pages to posting their performances on You-Tube.  Karthik Sharma, a 20-year-old musician who started a music-based company called ‘Kaati Kreatives’, says that apart from good talent, a band must know how to promote itself. His company gives chance to young talent and helps them with publicity.

“Bangalore is always bubbling with new talent. Every year, there are so many good bands cropping up. The best part is that most of them not only play cover songs but also compose original numbers, which is an added bonus,” he adds.

However, the chances of these bands having a bright future once the members pass out of college is very little. A lot depends on the degree of bonding between the members and how many of them actually want to take their band to the next level. At the same time, bands like ‘Galeej Gurus’ or even ‘Synapse’ have showed that there is a chance of making it big in the world of music.
