A police constable in Chennai sent her husband to attack the owner of a supermarket after she was caught red-handed stealing chocolates.

While constable D Nandhini has been placed under suspension, her husband, Dinesh, has been taken into custody by police.

The incident, which has been recorded in the CCTVs installed at the supermarket in Egmore area, took place on Wednesday when the constable working at G-1 Vepery Police Station, came for shopping.

The footage showed Nandhini picking up chocolates off the rack and placing them in her pocket while speaking on her mobile phone. Store owner Pranav, who was monitoring the footage, caught her red-handed. He also ensured that she sign a “letter of apology” for stealing chocolates from the supermarket.

In the letter, Nandhini has admitted to having stolen Odomos, 5 Star chocolate bar, Gems and Bar One chocolate, amounting to Rs Rs 115, and gave an undertaking that she “would not repeat” this again.

Enraged at being “insulted and humiliated”, Nandhini went home and sent her husband to avenge Pranav's actions. Dinesh, along with a few of his friends, barged into the supermarket and attacked the employees.

Pranav, who is currently being treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in the attack, complained to the police about the incident that led to Dinesh's arrest.

The incident has come as a major embarrassment for the Chennai Police, who have been battling allegations of high-handedness by some of their personnel.
