After years of indecision, the national capital on Thursday finally adopted a tagline — Dildaar Dilli (Magnanimous Delhi), which is being seen as a step to boost tourism.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Delhi’s new identity will attract a large number of tourists and put the city on global map.

“The idea behind the tagline is to sum up the essence of Delhi, its history, culture, modernity and diversity. Delhi is the gateway to India and it receives a record number of tourists every year,” Dikshit said.

“The city’s new identity will surely attract one and all. It will prove to be a benchmark in promoting Delhi on the global map,” she said while felicitating the winners of a competition held for suggesting a tagline for the national capital.

Delhi Tourism, in association with the Delhi government, had organised a contest inviting taglines from the people. Over 12,000 entries were received from all over the country.

The winner, Amit Anand, who coined the tagline ‘Dildaar Dilli’, was given a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

Eight participants, including a class 5 student Charvi Dixit, received consolation prizes. Charvi, who had suggested the tagline ‘Dildar, Shandar, Jandar Dilli’, got a special mention from the chief minister who thanked her for her efforts.

Dikshit said state’s tourism department played a vital role in attracting tourists here and this new tagline initiative will surely bring in rich dividends in terms of promoting Delhi as a tourist destination.

“The tagline will soon become popular and promote Delhi as a tourism-friendly destination,” she said.

The chief minister added that it was also a part of an aggressive marketing plan to promote the capital city on the global map.

Some states which have taglines are Karnataka (One State Many Worlds), Gujarat (Vibrant Gujarat), Meghalaya (Halfway to Heaven), Kerala (God’s Own Country) and Odisha (The Soul of India).
