In a significant judgment, the Delhi High Court on Friday allowed women to get permanent commission in the Navy. This means that women can now stay with the Indian Navy till they retire.

The Army and the Air Force allow permanent commission for women but the Navy had been limiting women officers only to short service commission.

A group of women naval officers had moved the Delhi High Court alleging gender discrimination and seeking rights similar to their counterparts in the other forces.

They pointed out that due to the forced short service commission they were losing out on career opportunities and had been deprived of pension as well.

Agreeing with them, the High Court said it would "frown upon any endeavour to block progress of women."
