Delhi Police files charge sheet against Kanhaiya, Umar

The Delhi police on Monday filed a charge sheet in a Delhi court against the former JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and former JNU students Syed Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya in a sedition case related to raising 'anti-national slogans' in a programme organised to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru, in 2016.

The Delhi police's special cell filed the charge sheet in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Anand who put it for taking cognisance on January 15.

The police invoked the offences of sedition, unlawful assembly and rioting among others against the former students. The Kashmiri students named in the charge sheet are Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rasool, Bashir Bhat and Bhsharat.

According to the police, the investigation into the incident on February 9, 2016, showed that all the footages showing the students raising slogans were genuine. The presence accused was established through mobile clip and video, it said.

“All were chargesheeted on the basis of electronic evidence and statement of students and security guard,” it said, adding the varsity administration has not granted any permission to the programme.
