A middle-aged man in Kolkata died after jumping in front of a Metro on Wednesday morning in an attempt to commit suicide. The incident took place at the Dum Dum Metro station in North Kolkata at around 9.18 am. Initially, there was a confusion regarding the condition of the passenger who was rushed to the government-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital but late on Wednesday evening Kolkata Police stated that he was declared bought dead by the doctors at the hospital.

“Today (Wednesday) at around 9.18 am one person named Tarak Acharjee suddenly jumped on the railway track, presumably for a suicidal bid in front of a down train at Dum Dum Metro Railway Station. He sustained serious bleeding injuries and was declared brought dead at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital,” stated the Kolkata Police in a daily incident report.

Earlier in the day, the incident resulted in severe disruption of Metro service which was stalled for more than one and a half hour. Metro services again resumed from 10.58 am.

“Services are normal in the entire Metro stretch from 10.58 am. Many tv channels are still showing that it is not normal and [there are] many other distortions. We would request correct reporting so as not to mislead the passengers,” the Kolkata Metro Rail authorities posted in their official Facebook page.

The incident came days after the fire broke out at a Kolkata Metro train. Several passengers fell ill due to smoke and others sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos. The Metro Rail authorities had faced severe criticism for the incident which put a big question mark on the safety standards of Kolkata Metro.
