Close shave for Jazeera fliers as engine catches fire

Passengers and the crew of a flight from Kuwait had a miraculous escape after one of the engines of the flight caught fire immediately after the aircraft touched down at the Shamshabad airport here around 1.30 pm.

After the Air Traffic Control cautioned the pilots, the alert ground crew rushed to the aircraft with fire tenders and doused the fire.

According to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) authorities, the right engine of Jazeera flight number J9 608 from Kuwait City to Hyderabad caught fire due to a technical problem while approaching the taxiway after landing.

“Immediately the aircraft stopped at the taxi way and fire tenders of GMR reached the spot, but meanwhile pilot stopped the engine and fire gradually came under control after that aircraft shifted to bay no 59 and there is total 145 onboard and there is no causality (sic),” the note added.

Passengers thanked the alert cabin crew who completed the evacuation while the fire in the engine was put off.
