The Centre has appointed JNU vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar as member of the University Grants Commission.

The Human Resource Development Ministry has appointed Kumar for a period of three years following the completion of D N Reddy’s term.

Kumar’s appointment as a member of the higher education regulator comes six months after he was made vice-chancellor of JNU after S K Sopory completed his term.

“The government of India has appointed M Jagadesh Kumar, vice-chancellor, JNU, as a member of the UGC,” a statement issued by the university said.

Kumar has been acknowledged for his contributions in the field of teaching and research, especially in the area of nanotechnology. He was conferred an award for excellence in teaching in the large class category at IIT Delhi in 2013.

Kumar had been facing ire from students and teachers since he took over as vice-chancellor of JNU on January 27.

Following the controversial event on the campus on February 9, they questioned Kumar’s role in the entire episode. They accused him of implementing RSS agenda on the campus, a charge denied by Kumar.  Police lodged a sedition case against JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar over accusations of anti-India sloganeering at a controversial event organised in memory of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on the campus on February 9.
