Karnataka professor in IIT Guwahati arrested

A mathematics professor at IIT Guwahati, who hails from Karnataka was arrested on Saturday after a woman filed an FIR here alleging molestation and attempt to rape her.

Police officials said K V Srikanth, an assistant professor at the IIT-G was arrested and was send to judicial custody in Nalbari in Western Assam, after he was produced in a court on Saturday.

"According to preliminary investigation, the woman is known to him for sometime but she lodged the FIR after she had a tiff with him. Accordingly, he was arrested," police at Gauripur pollice outpost in Kamrup district, where the case was registered, told DH.

IIT Guwahati is situated at Amingaon, about 30-km west of Guwahati under Kamrup district.

Police, however, could not tell the exact place in Karnataka, where he belongs to. They said the woman hails from outside Assam but did not divulge further information.

Srikanth could not be contacted for his version.

Sources in IIT-G said Srikanth, aged about 45 years, is a popular teacher and is unmarried. "As far as we know, they lived together for sometime but recently they had problem in their relationship. She wanted him to marry her but he probably refused and this prompted her to file a case," said the source.
