According to sources in the Chief Minister's office, Achuthanandan has referred the allegations to the Home department which is expected to refer the matter to the Lok Ayukta for further action.

The Lok Ayukta could examine the complaints and if it was found that an investigation was warranted, the anti-corruption body could order a probe, sources said. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy had last week submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister levelling 11 charges against Arun Kumar who holds a key position in the state-run Institute of Human Resources Development in Engineering.

The Opposition charges against Kumar included that he had allegedly tried to sabotage a CBI probe into the operations of other-state lotteries, taken bribe from sandalwood factory owners and got enrolled for PHd allegedly with bogus experience certificate.

The opposition also wanted an inquiry into foreign trips made by Kumar in his official capacity without getting proper permission from authorities concerned.
