A Congress party worker has approached the Delhi High Court for postponing Assembly elections in five states in view of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a writ petition, Jagdish Sharma contended that experts in India have warned that states like Delhi and a few others would see the peak of the third wave of Covid in the next few days.

"Due to elections in five States, almost all ministers of the Government are busy in elections and less concerned about the upcoming health emergency in the state," his plea said.

The 55-year-old petitioner, who claimed himself to be a social worker, also said in the past two years, a total of 4,85,780 people have lost their lives due to Covid-19.

Besides seeking postponement of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa, he also sought a direction to the Centre and Delhi government to submit an action plan, including on distribution of essential supplies, for dealing with the third wave of the pandemic.

Assembly polls in five States are scheduled in different phases between February 10 and March 7 and counting of votes would take place on March 10.
