The Supreme Court has said a student, who can't fill his or her roll number correctly in an examination, can't be shown any concession.

An excuse like there was some anxiety and it was a question of life and death would not help, it added.

"One failure in an exam does not mean that you would commit suicide and claim it was a question of life and death," a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta told a group of students.

The court dismissed a plea by Kuldeep Kumar Tiwari and others, challenging the Allahabad High Court order of April 25, declining to interfere into the matter.

"You can't say that I was scared of the examination and there was a sense of anxiety. Don't sit for examination if it is so," the bench told their counsel senior advocate Vibha Datta Makhija.

"You can't fill up your own roll number correctly. If you can't do it, you don't deserve to pass the examination," the bench added, rejecting their plea.

The candidates who appeared in the Uttar Pradesh Teachers' Eligibility Test 2017 admitted they had filled their registration number and roll number incorrectly in the optical mark recognition answer sheet.

They sought direction to the examination authority to manually check their sheets and declare the results.

"The candidates who appeared in the examination were mature students and were to be appointed as assistant teachers in the institution. They should have read the instructions that was issued time and again and should have correctly filled the entries relating to Roll Number, Registration Number, Question Booklet Series and Language attempted. The entries were, however, inaccurately filled as a result of which the scanner has not been able to process the result," the high court has said.
