The Supreme Court on Monday told the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that no defacement of public places, including mountains, hills and hillocks were made by political parties with advertisements and slogans.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta directed the state government to see to it that no disfigurement took place of natural resources.

The court said that the Tamil Nadu government did not take its suggestion made earlier in right spirit.

Senior advocate V Giri, appearing for the state government, submitted that the PIL petitioner can approach a committee formed by the Madras High Court and put forth his grievances over there which would be attended promptly.

The court directed that until further orders, the state government would ensure no disfigurement of public places took place.

The top court had on January 11 issued notice to the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government on a plea seeking to restrain political parties from erecting digital banners on roadside across the state.

The court was hearing a petition filed by a charitable trust 'In Defence of Environment and Animals'.
