The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the CBI on a plea for bail by Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and P S Narasimha sought a response from the central investigation agency within two weeks.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Mukerjea, submitted that his client has been in jail for more than six years and taking into account the ongoing state of affairs it is apparent that the trial will not come to an end in 10 years.

The bench sought to know from Rohatgi how many witnesses were there in the case.

He said 185 witnesses are yet to be examined.

The counsel also pointed out no witness has been examined in the past one and half years, as there was no presiding judge to the court since June 2021 and her husband was already on bail.

Rohatgi also said that the petitioner was not well.

Mukherjea has been in jail since 2015 in the case of the murder of her daughter.

Recently, she created a sensation by sending a letter to the CBI claiming that her daughter Sheena was alive.

In April 2012, a case was filed with the Mumbai Police alleging the kidnapping and murder of Sheena Bora. In 2015, the CBI took up the investigation.
