The Congress has clarified that it has not given any call for the Bharat bandh against the government’s decision to demonetise high-value notes on Monday.
“It (demonetisation) is a political move which is being sold as a fight against corruption,” senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told reporters here on Sunday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi “believes in dhamaka (explosive) politics” and the decision to scrap high-value currency notes was taken because he had seen the “writing on the wall” in Uttar Pradesh, which is due to go for Assembly polls next year, he added.
Ramesh described the Centre’s decision as “dramatic”, saying the notes were demonetised to cover up its “failure” to bring back black money.
